Are there photos/footage of the Titanic sinking?

Are there photos/footage of the Titanic sinking?

I know there are drawings and paintings from witnesses depicting the sinking of RMS Titanic, but are there any actual photographs or footage of the event happening?

This video claims to be footage of the Titanic sinking, but I am inclined not to believe it, because there have been many films made on the event. And not just the famous one from 1997, but there were also movies made on it from 1943 and 1953 as well. This "footage" could just be from one of those movies and the YouTuber took advantage of the old looking film to fool people (or perhaps he was misguided himself).

My question is, are there any photographs or footage of the RMS Titanic sinking? I am not interested in simulations or CGI interpretations, but real "on-sight" footage of the event.

Short answer: No.

The only film footage of the RMS Titanic shows her being towed into the outfitting wharf at Belfast in February 1912, and moored at Belfast. A clip of Lusitania leaving port has often been shown as a substitute for Titanic's maiden voyage commencement (including in the 1958 film 'A Night to Remember*).

No footage of Titanic leaving Southampton is known to exist.

There is almost certainly no footage of the actual sinking. Put simply, it just wouldn't have been practical to film it. In 1912, motion picture equipment was large and cumbersome.

Even ordinary photography, with 'simple' cameras like this, in 1912 required a lot of light to produce a reasonable image. I'm pretty sure someone would have noticed, and commented on, magnesium flash powder being set off from one of the lifeboats during the sinking.

Sadly, the video in your original question appears to be a fake. The truth is that the best video we have of the actual RMS Titanic has been that filmed since she was re-discovered by Robert Ballard on the Atlantic seabed in 1985.

Not of the ship sinking but there is one of the suspected iceberg it hit.

The photo was taken from a ship sailing in the area some time later. As it passed by an iceberg someone noticed there were paint stains near the waterline. It was the only iceberg in the vicinity of the wreck

Also a salvage vessel took some shots of a lifeboat picked up with a couple of dead bodies inside. This was something like 3 months later.

**Minor edit correction - ship wasn't Carpathia.*

I saw the same video of the sinking of titanic on YouTube and I compared it to the 1997 movie and as far as I can tell they were identical. But I noticed that the windows on the waterline were different than in the movie. So I looked on other movies like The Night to Remember. Bingo! I found an exact similarity to the Titanic lights going out.

I looked at each flash of the lights same amount. The waterline was about to where the 3rd funnel would be. Although, I noticed that the Titanic in The Night to Remember was facing to the right and I had another conclusion - Whoever did the fake video switched the Titanic from The Night to Remember to face left. But actually, if this wasn't surprising enough, there is only 1 picture of the Titanic sinking! It is a picture of Molly Brown drinking Coffee on the B deck dining as the ship sank. even without looking at the differences its obviously fake because the speed of the video would have been speed up because back then film was a lot faster than reality. were you see some one walking bye that person is walking normally were in the film that person seems to be speed walking. just turn on any old 1930s show and even that is the same.

The Oldest Footage Of Titanic Is Heartbreaking

Genuine & authenticated. Several Titanic experts have confirmed this stunning footage as the OLDEST AND ONLY known remaining film of Titanic above water. Combined with footage from the wreck – utterly beautiful and heartbreaking.

More than a century has passed since the great ship Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on the early morning of 15 April 1912.

Ever since, the demand for any footage of the ship has been high. Several films from around 1912 claim to show Titanic before her maiden voyage, while they in fact feature her sister ship, the Olympic.

At least 5 genuine films of Titanic were made, but to date only one survives, ‘Titanic Leaving Belfast Loch For Southampton’.

We consulted the experts to authenticate the following footage as the only known remaining film of Titanic above water.

“This footage is indeed the only known film of Titanic (at present at least).”

– Dr. Rudi Newman PhD, Hon. Secretary, British Titanic Society

“…the only genuine Titanic footage still in existence.”

– Charles Haas, President, Titanic International Society, Inc.

‘Titanic Leaving Belfast Loch For Southampton’

The film was produced in 1912 by an unknown production company. The footage was shot at the Harland and Wolff shipyard on Saturday the 3rd of February 1912. The title is somewhat misleading, as the film actually shows Titanic entering the Thompson Graving Dock in Belfast prior to final modifications (such as enclosing the forward A Deck).

This is known because as she is unpainted in the footage and the promenade windows on A-deck are not yet enclosed.

“…Titanic was entering the drydock.”

– Tom Lynskey, Director, Titanic: Honor and Glory

Real footage of the Titanic sinking

but a few days ago, there was a documentary of the Titanic on National geographic. About unknown bodies, that where found.

And through the documentary there where some real footage of the Titanic leaving port. And when they reconstructed the sinking there was a little peace of footage (It was not that long) taken from in a live boat, you could see the Titanic, and an otter lifeboat that was lowered in to the water. This looked like real footage. It was really short, but I’m kind of sure it was real.
I could be wrong.

But haze there been filmed during the sinking?

Dan Cherry

I haven't seen the documentary you're speaking about. However, here is some insight.
The only moving picture footage of Titanic is her being towed into the outfitting wharf at Belfast in February 1912. A clip of Lusitania leaving port has often been shown as a substitute for Titanic's maiden voyage commencement, including the 1958 film 'A Night to Remember'.
No known footage of Titanic leaving Southampton is known to exist.

Secondly, there is no known footage of the actual sinking. Simply put, it wouldn't have been practical to have done so. The equipment was cumbersome and motion picture and ordinary photography in 1912 required large amounts of light to produce a useable image. Despite what the movies depict, there would have been little on-deck light. Setting off magnesium flash powder would have undoubtedly been noticed, and no one mentions anything of the sort happening during the sinking.

Oftentimes, these documentaries make what we call "recreations" where they film re-created scenes to add drama to their documentaries.

2. White Star vs Cunard

White Star Line chairman and managing director J. Bruce Ismay was under tremendous pressure to turn the company around. The White Star Line was struggling to compete with its competitors and were trying to keep their heads above water as they placed their bets in the transatlantic shipping wars. The competition was brutal.

(Photo by George Rinhart/Corbis via Getty Images)

Main rivals such as Cunard Line boasted and advertised how their ships were the fastest and most luxuriant ocean liner services in the world. Ismay seethed. Though Cunard Line had speed, White Star Line was going for size and opulence, and Ismay&rsquos ideas were gargantuan. However, there were also drawbacks.

REAL photos of Titanic sinking

Matt, nobody left the ship with a camera, or if they did they must have kept strangely quiet about it. It would in any case have been very difficult to take pictures at night, either inside or on deck. Small snapshot cameras using roll film were quite common in 1912, but these could be used only in bright daylight. If there had been any heavy, tripod-mounted studio equipment on board this would have created a considerable obstruction, and the use of flash powder would have temporarily blinded everyone in the immediate vicinity. Not the way to become popular!

Certainly a number of cameras and exposed film plates and rolls must have gone down with the ship, but the gelatin used as a binding agent in photographic emulsions was very nutritious to marine life and has long since disappeared into the food chain along with any images it might once have contained.

At this point it might be useful to review the possibilities and limitations of the kind of cameras and film available to the Edwardian public. Simple, cheap box cameras and folding pocket models like those made by Kodak had been sold in vast numbers in both Europe and the US, with Kodak's cheapest model, the Box Brownie, selling for one dollar and affordable by just about anyone. There were over a million of this one model alone in use by 1912 and it is likely that at least a few of these are now in or around the wreck of the Titanic.

The cheapest models had no viewfinder (just a couple of painted 'sighting lines') and no controls other than the shutter release and the winder for the film roll, which was generally the 120 size still in use today. These cameras were designed for ease of use by non-professionals and had a fixed shutter speed of about 1/30 second, perfectly adequate for taking pictures of moving people on the deck of a ship (sinking or otherwise) in bright daylight. The film 'speed', however, was hopelessly inadequate for taking pictures at night, even indoors under normal lighting. As Michael has said, the only form of artificial light sufficient to record an image on the film stock of 1912 was that which came from burning magnesium, which was commonly used in studios but was not a portable source for casual use by amateurs.

To sum up, although there was probably no shortage of cameras aboard the Titanic, nobody would have seriously considered even trying to use one on the night of the sinking.

The Titanic Strikes an Iceberg

On April 14, after four days of uneventful sailing, Titanic received sporadic reports of ice from other ships, but she was sailing on calm seas under a moonless, clear sky.

At about 11:30 p.m., a lookout saw an iceberg coming out of a slight haze dead ahead, then rang the warning bell and telephoned the bridge. The engines were quickly reversed and the ship was turned sharply—instead of making direct impact, Titanic seemed to graze along the side of the berg, sprinkling ice fragments on the forward deck.

Sensing no collision, the lookouts were relieved. They had no idea that the iceberg had a jagged underwater spur, which slashed a 300-foot gash in the hull below the ship’s waterline.

By the time the captain toured the damaged area with Harland and Wolff’s Thomas Andrews, five compartments were already filling with seawater, and the bow of the doomed ship was alarmingly pitched downward, allowing seawater to pour from one bulkhead into the neighboring compartment.

Andrews did a quick calculation and estimated that Titanic might remain afloat for an hour and a half, perhaps slightly more. At that point the captain, who had already instructed his wireless operator to call for help, ordered the lifeboats to be loaded.

Divers Visited the Titanic's Wreck for the First Time in Over a Decade. Here's Why They Were Shocked by the Ship's Condition

N ew footage detailing the condition of the Titanic has scientists speculating that the shipwreck will have disintegrated entirely within the next 30 years.

An expedition team led by Caladan Oceanic CEO and deep-sea explorer Victor Vescovo recently dove to the wreck in the five times over the course of eight days, sourcing the most up-to-date images of the famous sunken liner. Vescovo also recently broke the world record for deep-diving with a recent descent 35,853 feet into the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, the deepest natural trench in the world

The wreck of the Titanic has lain at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the Canadian province of Newfoundland since April 1912, when it hit an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. Of the 2,207 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 died.

Atlantic Productions London, the team behind an upcoming documentary that is set to air the explorers’ findings, captured footage of a particularly affected area located on the starboard side of the ship. “The team of experts and scientists examined the remains of the ship, capturing for the first time extraordinary native 4K footage using specially adapted cameras,” a statement from Atlantic Productions read. “Using the submersible camera systems, the team performed dedicated photogrammetry passes on the wreck, allowing highly accurate and photoreal 3D models of RMS Titanic to be produced.”

In recent years, a mapping project has been undertaken to track and memorialize Titanic’s resting place in 2012, the wreck became a UNESCO cultural heritage site. And with the ship’s continued deterioration to consider, the urgency of such projects is increasing. The “captain’s bathtub,” a well-known part of the wreck (pictured above) has now disappeared completely due to disintegration, Titanic historian Parks Stephenson noted in Atlantic Productions’ statement.

The ship, which fell to the seabed in two parts, can now be found 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland at a depth of roughly 12,600 feet. Fields of debris surround each part of the wreck, including some of the ship’s bunkers, passengers’ luggage, wine bottles and even the intact face of a child’s porcelain doll. The team’s August expedition is the first time in 14 years that the wreckage site has been visited by a human-occupied vehicle.

Henrietta Mann, a researcher at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has studied the Titanic’s wreck for years. In 2010 she co-discovered a new species of bacteria &mdash Halomonas titanicae &mdash found in rusticle samples taken from the wreck. Halomonas titanicae is among the bacteria found on the wreck, which eat away at the ship’s iron, breaking it down. This process results in rusticles, fragile rust formations which resemble icicles. Rusticles can be seen all over the wreck, in a constant state of disintegration and regrowth.

Mann tells TIME that she has seen the explorers’ footage and cites a number of key factors &mdash corrosion, oceanic eddies and undercurrents, and the impact of the iron-eating bacteria &mdash as contributing to the shipwreck’s current state (as well as its future prospects). She also cites the weight of the wreck as a supplementary factor in its deterioration. In essence, it is working against itself. “If one level deteriorates at the top [of the wreck], it drops to the next one,” she explains, “which means it … impacts on the lower levels. Damage is done layer after layer.”

Mann says it’s impossible to know exactly how long it will take for the ship to completely fall apart, but the observed damage can offer clues. Her best estimation is that there remain approximately 30 years until the wreck has disintegrated entirely. Even then, its condition is likely to grow increasingly worse over time, she says. “Logic tells you [that] more structurally it is damaged, the more quickly it will deteriorate.&rdquo

Triton Submarines president Patrick Lahey piloted three of the team’s five dives. He said that the shipwreck is returning to its “elemental form.”

&ldquoThe most fascinating aspect was seeing how the Titanic is being consumed by the ocean while providing refuge for a remarkably diverse number of animals,&rdquo he said in a statement.

Expedition team leader Vescovo tells TIME that the shipwreck was actually in better condition than he expected. “I had read some projections by some scientists that major portions might have utterly collapsed since the last photo survey in 2010, but, at least at the bow, they haven’t,” he says. “There was less of a ‘collapse’ than just a slow, steady, degradation of the exterior areas. The fact that there are still many glass portholes intact amazed me, and really impressed me just how durable this ship is.”

“Biology and current are slowly eroding the wreck as one would expect it to,” he continues. “But we should remember that the wreck has been down there 107 years in strong currents and seawater, so it is a matter of not if, but when, the sea will reclaim it in its entirety.”

Haunting Photographs and Quotes from Titanic Survivors

The RMS Titanic was a British passenger cruise liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning of April 15, 1912. It collided with an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. It is remembered as one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history with over 1,500 casualties out of about 2,224 passengers and crew aboard the ship. At the time of its accident, the Titanic was the largest ship afloat.

The Titanic carried some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of European emigrants seeking better lives in the United States.

The first-class accommodations included a gymnasium, squash court, a Turkish bath, steam room, massage room, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants, a men&rsquos Smoking Room, and lavish cabins. The Titanic, despite having advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, there were not enough lifeboats to accommodate all those on board. There were lifeboats for only 1,178 people: a little more than half of the number of passengers on board, and one-third of the total capacity.

On April 14, around 11:40 ship&rsquos time about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, the Titanic collided with an iceberg and caused the ship&rsquos hull to buckle inwards along the starboard side. The collision opened five of the sixteen watertight compartments to the sea. She was only capable of surviving four compartments flooding.

At 2:20 in the morning, the Titanic broke apart and sank. In less than two hours after the Titanic sank, the RMS Carpathia arrived at the scene and was able to rescue about 700 survivors.
